Captain's Commission In The 136th Regiment Of Tennessee Militia:
Before Tennessee seceded from the Union on May 1, 1861, Thomas
Spencer Williams joined the 136th Regiment of Tennessee Militia
and was elected Captain. The below facsimile represents his
commission as Captain signed by Govenor Harris. Once Tennessee
seceded from the Union and linked her destiny to the
Confederate States of America, he joined the regular Confederate
States Army, the 9th Tennessee Infantry, on 24 May 1861 where he
was enrolled as Orderly (Top) Sergeant. His men knew him as
Orderly Sergeant Thomas "Fighting Tom" Williams.
