The following account was told by Sarah Ruth "Sally" Smith:
Time of death: Just after midnight the morning of the 26th. Sarah
Ruth Smith Swiecki visited her brother shortly before he passed.
He wanted her to sing the old hymn "I'll Fly Away, O Glory,
I'll Fly Away" and she obliged. She overheard him say, "Mama,
I'm ready to come home". Hershel lived 11 years hooked up to a
feeding tube. About a month ago, he was going out to water his
tomatoes, and fell down some steps and was taken to the hospital.
He never recovered from the fall. Hershel was a very fine
gentleman and beloved by all. He was 91 years old, almost as
old as his father, Thomas Rogers Smith, who lived to almost
93 years.

WWII Navy Veteran: Ralph suffered for years from the effects
of shell shock and brain damage received during World War II. Ralph
was in the Navy during the war. He was assigned to the USS Sterrett,
a destroyer, which saw A LOT of action in the Pacific. During the
war, the vessel lost 27 killed in action and 37 wounded.
