Civil War Line #2: On 23 MAR 1861, Captain Thomas
"Fighting Tom" Spencer Williams was elected Captain of the
136th Regiment of the Tennessee Militia of Obion County,
Tennessee. After Tennessee seceeded from the Union on 1
MAY 1861, he enlisted in the regulars, Headquarters Company
of the 9th Tennessee Infantry, the "Obion Avalanche",
Confederate States Army, where he was detailed as
Orderly Sergeant. An Orderly Sergeant was the top sergeant
in a company similar to today's First Sergeant or Master
Sergeant. He would be the person who called the company
to attention and drill them in the various formations
used in that day as battle formations. Since he had
previously served one year in the Mexican-American
War of 1846, it is presumed he would have been familiar
with these duties.

Civil War Line #3: Sergeant Horace Dumblton, great
grandfather of Mildred Frances Self, was an infantryman
fighting for the Union with Company "A", 32nd Wisconsin
Infantry Regiment, United States Army. He joined up late
in the war, from Metomen, Wisconsin. Isn't it curious
that while Mildred Frances Self's great grandfather,
Major David Washington Self, was fighting for the
Confederacy, her great grandfather, Sergeant Horace
Dumbleton, was fighting for the Union?
