B. Smith Sent: Sunday, May 08, 2005 5:52 PM Subject: Permission to include on CD Dear Mr. Self, I am a Self relative. My mother was Mildred Frances Self. Her father was David Edgar Self. His father was Dr. Christopher Columbus Self. His father was David Washington Self. I would like permission to use the webpage at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~selffam/SelfSeek/julypic2.htm on
a CD I am sending along to my Self relative and to my Smith
relatives. Many facts stated on the page about Major David Washington Self are
not accurate. I've made a study of David W. Self. He was severely wounded on
the second day of the Battle of Shiloh. That was when he was sent home to die,
not from a POW camp. He became a POW and was surrendered at Vicksburg,
along with 31,600 other Confederate soldiers, and sent home on parole. I
have this both this surrender document and the end-of-war surrender document
from the National Archives in
In any case, I would still like to include this .HTM page on the CD to round out the info I have on my great great grandfather.

This is Barbara, half of the team that hosts "Self Portraits" and a bunch of other things beneath my signature...
I'm replying for Tim Seawolf-Self...
I have you right here in front of me--your entry, that is: Donald Bernard Smith, b. Jan. 23, 1940, son of Herman Hurtis and Mildred Frances (Self) Smith...
Once before, the entries for D. W. Self were corrected, but I guess equally incorrectly in some places...Frank Coleman Self was a really nice person, and even though he was very ill, he did the best he could to give us as much and as accurate information as he knew. He would surely be so happy to have it updated--and we aren't too pleased with having false data on any of our pages...
So--thank you for the revision! And the answer is yes, definitely, you have our permission to use the page, just making sure that our copyright is placed on it with a link back to the "Self Seekers Newsletter" and "Self Portraits."
Now, the next question? May we link to or use your html page and the two scans to make sure the proper information is seen by our cousins? I would include it in the next issue of the "Self Seekers Newsletter" which will be uploaded on July 1, and I'll put a link on the old page at that time to direct people to the revision. As you do, I realize some people would look at the old page and go no further if they didn't realize there was more to be said :-))
Thanks for everything, Don, and please write anytime...we'd love to purchase a CD when it's ready, too...

Sent: Sunday, May 08, 2005 9:45 PM Subject: Second permission requested for CD Dear Barbara, thank you very much for allowing me to use the info. I forgot to ask you permission for another page also. It is a letter written by David Washington Self to his son Samuel Elisha Self from the Louisiana House of Representatives on May 27, 1890. I tried to access this web page but it no longer is in existence. Anyway, may I use the letter? Also, my dad's name was not Herman Hurtis Smith, rather Hurtis Alvin Smith. My CD is not for sale as it is a labor of love for my departed Self mother (D: Sept 2003), so I offer it as a free gift to Self/Smith relatives. So if you'll give me a mailing address, I'll be glad to send it along. No charge. I see that Tim is from Southern California. I live in Costa Mesa, next to Newport Beach. Perhaps we are neighbors.Regards, Cousin DON SMITH.(Email: smithdonb@earthlink.net) -----

Smith Sent: Sunday, May 08, 2005 7:07 PM Subject: Re: Permission to include on CD Yes, of course. I have no idea how that URL got so garbled, but if you can send me the URL of the page that has the link to the unavailable page, I'll fix it--we have so many pages, that I'm not sure where the link is located...but I need to correct that!
Our address until June 30 is: (Editor Don Smith: Address
deleted from email)
We're sort of neighbors. We're based in Riverside County, between Lake Elsinore and Perris...but our operations are moving to the High Desert near Hesperia as of June 30. I don't know what the address there will be, but if the CD isn't finished by then, please let me know and I should know by that time...
Thank you so much...and you can use anything you find useful in the "Self Seekers" newsletters...
