Note Of Editor, Don Smith The information provided here comes from two sources. Primarily, it comes from a three page document written by Reba G. Jones in 1977. Secondarily, additional information about certain individuals is provided by the Self family genealogy of my relative Christopher Columbus Self, Jr. who worked on his Self Genealogy for nine years. Uncle C.C. passed away June 15, 1982. To visit the cemetery today requires going to Hodges Gardens, located 3 miles north of Hornbeck, Louisiana, and requesting that a ranger let you through the back gate going to the old Self Cemetery. From the back gate, it is about a quarter mile down a dirt road. Hodges Gardens is located in Sabine Parish, while Hornbeck is located in Vernon Parish just south of the Parish line.

┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐

This is an old family cemetery, established by the     │

David Washington Self and Frank Dawson Self families.  │

The two men mentioned were brothers, who settled in    │

between Florien and Plainview Community sometime       │

before 1846.  The location is near the banks of Mill   │

Creek, a tributary of Toro Creek, or Bayou, as it      │

was formerly called.  David Washington Self served     │

as a police juror, Sabine Parish Tax Assessor, Sabine  │

Parish Sheriff, and as State Representative from       │

Sabine Parish.  He was also the Captain, later Major   │

of the Sabine Rebels, a volunteer infantry company     │

from Sabine Parish during the War Between The States.  │

│                                                        │

Frank Dawson Self was also a member of this unit, and  │

served as a lieutenant, being among the Louisiana units

who were captured and paroled at the fall of Vicksburg

in 1863.                                               │

│                                                        │

The Self Cemetery now must be reached by an old road   │

behind Hodges Gardens.                                 │

│                                                        │

│                    Reba G. Jones, 1977

├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤

In all the tombstone inscriptions, no effort is made   │

here to keep the spacing and indentations on the tombs.

The capitalization, punctuation, alignment and exact   │

wording are kept, although any copyist could make an   │

error in these particulars, also, of course.           │

                                      R. G. J.          │
