Photo of David Davis, Jr., (1792 to 1864). He was a veteran
of the War of 1812 and the great-grandfather of Francis
Edward “Dusty” Green, Willard Davis “Will” Green, John Maxwell
“Jack” Green and George Green. This photo does not appear to be
a tintype (1856 to 1940s), a negative affixed to iron coated with
black lacquer. It neither appears to be an ambrotype (1850 to 1890s),
a thin glass negative viewed against a black background. It actually
appears to be an early wet collodion print (1851 to 1889s), a process
in which a glass negative is used to make one or more prints on albumen
paper. I “guesstimate” his age to be 60, which means that the photo was
taken in 1852, a very early ambrotype. He died 12 years after this photo
was taken, in 1864.
