The information in the dark blue type below was taken from the book series:
Massachusetts Commonwealth; Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of
the Revolution (17 volumes); Wright and Potter Printing Company, (Boston, 1896).
The 17 volume book series is contained on a CD sold by Ancestry.com.
The reason I purchased the CD from Ancestry.com is because I found a Revolutionary War reference
to Nathaniel Dumbleton at (click to view):
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nysarato/batldo.htm. Next to his name is Ref. MA01. The MA01 refers to the aforementioned book series. Click next to view: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nysarato/sarapk.htm#Top |

The first battle of Saratoga began on Sept. 19, 1777, two
days before Nathaniel Dumbleton's enlistment began. The Americans
began arriving in droves, eventually growing to some 20,000 men who
completely surrounded the British which had been whittled down to a paltry 6000 troops.
Nathaniel Dumbleton was one of those 20000 Minutemen at the Battle of Saratoga.
British General Burgoyne could not understand how the Americans had
assembled so many troops so fast who were all armed to the teeth. In his
own country few common folk had weapons. Just about every American household
in those times had several weapons which they brought with them to do battle. The
Battle of Saratoga ended on Oct. 17, 1777, when British General Burgoyne surrendered.
This was the very first great victory of the Revolution. Notice that once the
fighting ceased, local militia were released to go home. That is why Nathaniel
Dumbleton's enlistment expired on Oct. 17, 1777 the same day the British surrendered.
