Note of editor, Don Smith: I waded through all, meaning dozens and dozens, of
Ancestry.com's 1850 census data for Robert Green. This
is the only one that fit the bill. I was looking for a
Robert Green around 30 years of age who was born
in New York. There were at least two others who fit
but their race was given as black. His age is known
from the 1860 census which is accurate because his wife,
Fanny Marie Bray, and two Green sons were enumerated. I'm
thinking that this 1850 census information must be
the correct one as it is the is the ONLY one found
which matched the two requirements of age 30 born
in New York. Another consideration is that the census was
taken in Lewis County, New York which is the county just
west and adjacent to his birth county of Herkimer.
A family could literally move one mile west from Herkimer
County and be in Lewis County. Please look at the map just
below.
The twelve year old child, Irene Bine, may be a cousin or neighbor
child who fell on hard times and was staying with them. In 1850 it
also was not unheard for a poor family to board out a child of that
age who would work for room, board and keep. Irene Bine was born
in Ireland. I wonder how she got here at such a tender age. I would
love to hear her story.
