John arrived at Hartford, CT and served William Whiting there and at Windsor, CT

until his service expired in 1645. He was a selectman at Springfield 16 times between

1655 and 1691, and also served in various other public capacities. His will named his

son Nathaniel, daughters Lydia, Hannah and Rebecca, and granddaughter Marah

(apparently the daughter of John, Jr.,deceased).

Different Versions Of The Life And Times Of Thomas Marshfield:
Note that with a correct reading of Winthrop's Journal, Thomas is identified as arriving from Barnstable, Devonshire aboard the "Regard" in 1634. The revised entry for Nov. 13, 1634 is:"The Regard, a ship of Barnstable, of about two hundred tons, arrived with twenty passengers and about fifty cattle. One thing I think fit to observe, as a witness to God's providence for this plantation. There came in this ship one Marisfield, a poor, godly man of Exeter, being very desirous to come to us, but not able to transport his family. There was in the city a rich merchant, one Marshall, who being troubled in his dreams about the said poor man, could not be quiet till he had sent for him and given him £50, and them lent him £100, willing him withal, that, if he wanted, he should sent to him for more. This Marisfield grew suddenly rich, and then lost his godliness, and his wealth soon after."

Thomas was living in Windsor, CT when he sold some of his land. On Oct. 14, 1642, Thomas was relieved of his entire estate to pay debts incurred, probably from a shipping venture begun in 1640 with Henry Wolcott, Samuel Wakeman and the Wyllys family. In late 1642, he is said to have "withdrawn" from Windsor, and may have died then. No further record is found and Savage states 'Perhaps he was lost at sea."

Thomas MARSHFIELD was born about 1600 either in Springfield, Massachusetts, or Windsor, Connecticut. He moved to Dorchester with Mr. WARHAM's group. On 6 May 1641, he wrote a letter to Samuel WAKEMAN. That is the last record of Thomas MARSHFIELD. In 1642, he disappeared and was presumed to have been lost at sea and the court appointed trustees to manage his estate for his creditors.

His widow and family moved to Springfield where their daughter, Sarah, married Thomas MILLER in 1649.

He was in Dorchester in 1635 and by 1637 he was in Windsor, Ct. Hinman says he left the Windsor Colony, 1643, apparently on account of some difficulty in the Church. He was a gentleman of good standing, and presumed to have been the father of Samuel, one of the proprietors of Westfield, who died in Springfield, MA, 1692. Priscilla Marshfield, whose died in Oct 20, 1693 may have been his wife or daughter. He probably married near Exeter, Devonshire, England.

Mercy Marshfield - buried. Sep. 30, 1654, Springfield, Hampden Co., MA. Her given name appears in her death record according to the research of Douglas RICHARDSON (The American Genealogist, Vol. 67, No. 1, pp. 11-15). In 1649, as the 'widow Marshfield,' she resided at Springfield, MA, being previously from Windsor, CT, and having three children - including one married daughter. She was accused of being a witch, and brought court action against Mary PARSONS for making a false accusation. Mary was sentenced to be whipped, and to pay £3 to Goody MARSHFIELD "for and towards the reparation of her good name." Goody was a nickname meaning "Good Woman".

You may notice that no children are listed for Samuel Dumbleton. It is at this point that the trail grows dim. I must rely on oral family tradition. This oral traditions confirms that the original Dumbleton of this line was John Dumbleton, born about 1620 in England. It is known that John served William Whiting as an indentured servant first in Hartford, Connecticut and also in Windsor, Connecticut until his service expired in 1645. Many individuals immigrated from England and paid for their passage by becoming an indentured servant and served a household until the passage money was paid off. It is unknown if John shipped over to America as an indentured servant, or he first arrived in America and later somehow became indentured to pay off a debt. What is known is that after 1645 he established himself in at Springfield, Massachusetts, where he was a selectman at Springfield 16 times between 1655 and 1691, and also served in various other public capacities.

I believe that our Dumbleton line goes from John Dumbleton (b:1620) to son Nathaniel Dumbleton (b:1664) to son Samuel Dumbleton (b:1713) to son Nathaniel Dumbleton (b:1740). Note that Nathaniel's birth record shown below from the Massachusetts Town Birth Records is the tie connecting Samuel to his son Nathaniel. Notice below that the father's name is listed as Samuel. The fact that the last name is misspelled is not significant as the Dumbleton surname was often misspelled. Editor Don Smith.

Nathaniel Dumbleton's birthplace in 1740 is sometimes given as Grafton, Vermont. This cannot be! There is no doubt that he lived there as his name appears on the census records, but the Town of Grafton only acquired its name in 1791. Before that its name was Thomlinson. In fact, Nathaniel Dumbleton was listed on the Thomlinson Census of 1790. Editor Don Smith.

1837 Dumbleton Bible

Please note that the Rootsweb site above only lists 3 children for Alpheus Dumbleton and Betsy Bisbee. There is, however, a 169 year old Dumbleton Bible, counting from year 2007, which lists more children. The below Dumbleton family information was copied down from the 169 year old Dumbleton Bible in the possession of Grace Elnorah Dumbleton, daughter of Hiram Lorin Dumbleton and niece of Horace Dumbleton. My grandmother, Elsie Elnora Green Self, used to correspond with Grace's sister, Lillian Ethel Dumbleton Smith (Birth: 18 MAR 1896. Married: Milton Smith on 7 DEC 1920), and obtained from her the below family genealogical information. Lillian said that she copied it out of a Bible that her sister Grace Elnorah Dumbleton had. This was in 1965 and she said that the Bible was then 128 years old, dating to the year 1837.

The information was typed up and handed out to family members. I received a copy of these notes from my sister, Barbara June "Bobby" Smith Parsley, who received them from my grandmother Elsie, mentioned above.
